West Suffolk Wheelers and Tri Club on the telly! Thanks to all members that turned out on Wednesday 17th Feb for the TV recording about the Suffolk Sport Grant for Cycling. As everyone that attended will know, we put on a show of Go Ride Skills, Turbo Training and Road Riding, and spent about 45 minutes with the presenter and camera man. Inevitably most of the material wasn’t used, but we did get excellent coverage through out the day on Thursday. I have reports that we appeared at least three times on the early morning local news reports, featured on the Look East programme at 6.45, and further shots of us on again at 10.30 pm. The news item was certainly good news for cycling in Suffolk and the coverage must have helped public awareness of the issue, and of the West Suffolk Wheelers and Tri Club in particular. Well done everyone, especially Helen Ballam for making the arrangements. Last Updated (Friday, 05 March 2010 21:14) |
Calling all riders - Urgent and Important Publicity Opportunity! We have just heard via Helen Ballam that Suffolk Sport have just won a funding bid for £500 000 from Sport England to promote cycling in the Eastern Region in the coming three years. This news is about to break on Thursday and BBC Look East are preparing for it. They have contacted us and want to feature West Suffolk Wheelers as one of the most active clubs in the region. We are hurriedly arranging a meeting of cyclists of all ages and disciplines to show them what we do, and provisional arrangements are to meet at Moreton Hall Youth Club on Wednesday Morning at about 10 am ~ as many riders in red shirts as we can muster!
We are not yet sure exactly what they will want, but we are hoping to organise a ‘ride-past’ of an orderly group of roadies, some youngsters doing Go Ride skills training and possibly a mock race, perhaps a rider or two training on turbos and hopefully an interview. We really need good support from all those Wheelers that can make it. There is the possibility that this money could help us reach our club-room goal, but in any event it is doubtlessly going to help cycling in the region. The above arrangements are PROVISIONAL, but will be CONFIRMED by another email tomorrow morning, when we know more ourselves. Please let Barry Denny or Helen Ballam know if you are likely to be able to play a part. Club Room gets Approval
Progress will now be sought to make this project a reality. We still need to raise at least £7 000 to reach our target, with our fund and grants already standing at over £25 000. We will now get current prices for the purchase and the service connections and pursue the ground lease offer made by Suffolk County Council. We will also be meeting with the contractors who are already on-site building an Employment Skills Annexe adjacent to the area planned for our building, to see if any sort of co-operation would be possible. This is a very exciting prospect for the club, membership of which is continuing to grow, both in respect of cyclists and triathletes, following our recent decision to embrace this sport. But we are not there yet, and much effort will still be required not only in fundraising and organising the purchase and erection, but also in making the venture as successful as it can be. Whilst I can understand the worries and concerns of those that expressed reservations in respect of the scheme I hope we can rely on the support of ALL members in making it successful. It will enable us to do many things that we have not been able to do previously ~ the club is already much more than just ‘riding on the road’ and this initiative will enable us the make the best club in the area EVEN BETTER. More news in due course. ~ Barry Denny, Club Chairman Last Updated (Friday, 05 March 2010 21:14) Membership Reminder 2010Many thanks to those people who have renewed their membership for 2010; forms with cheques have been coming in every day in January. There are still quite a number of members from last year who have yet to rejoin so I hope that you will do that very soon. If you've misplaced the form sent out earlier in the year you can download one from the Club website. Hope to hear from you soon.Members may be interested to learn that we've had a record 10 new members in January. A big welcome to you all. The 18 or so members who paid in advance in 2009 need do nothing until I ask you to do so in the years ahead. Peter HeathMembership Sec Last Updated (Friday, 05 March 2010 20:45) FUNDING NEWSWe have heard from The Havebury Housing Authority that the £5,000 grant they made us towards the building of our own clubroom has been extended to October 2010. This grant was originally planned to expire (if not used) in January, but we have explained the difficulties we have encountered in raising the balance of the funds needed. We now have nine months in which to make a reality of this aim. The issues around this matter will be discussed and debated in full at the Special General Meeting that has been called for January 11th. All members will receive a notice of this meeting, and we ask for a full attendance.
