Weekend Racing Action
West Suffolk Wheelers Vets track squad, made up of Team Captain Barry Denny, Steve Newman, James Carpenter and Adrian Grimwood made the long journey to Newport track for the LVRC Track Championships. On the weekend 1st nov 2009.
First up on the track was Adi in the 40 -44 Points race. Up against very experienced riders from top teams adiheld in the action until the race was ripped apart by eventual race winner Paul Wain ( Team Endura ) gaining a lap on the field. With the race coming back together adi was in position to score a point to put him on the scoreboard and finish 8th in a very hotly contested race.
Next up was James Carpenter in the 45-49 age group. Although not scoring any points James managed to stay in the group in a race that was quite quick.
Steve Newman also raced the points as did our Team Captain Barry; both raced well although they did not score points.
Steve and James were then up in the Sprint qualifiers. Both riders did very well recording times of13.86 and 13.08 respectively. This was followed by the sprint proper both riders riding well but being out foxed by seasoned sprinters meant that neither made it to the semi’s.
The last event on Saturday was the Team Pursuit. This was an unknown event for us but Barry, Steve and Adi recorded a time of 4.16.8 for 3000 meters.
Sunday and day two of event saw all Wheelers in action in the pursuit. First up again was Adi recording a time of 4.06.8, James 4.04.5 for 3000 meters. Followed by Steve 2.43.4, and Barry 2.55.9, both seasons best for 2000 meters.
Scratch Races then followed later with all wheelers in action . Barry managing the highest placed finish his race (7th).
The last event for Wheelers was the 750 / 500m time trial . James ‘s fine effort recorded a time of 57.44 (750m). Steve watching the racing was in the words of Baldrick hatching a Cunning Plan. The plan being to go faster than any body else and win gold . On the start line, three two one and Steve was away with an all out effort that got him over the line in a time of 40.31 sec. As with most of baldrick’s cunning plans it was 100% but none the less it was good enough for an impressive Bronze medal. The highlight of our weekend. Well done Steve.
Also in action over the Weekend was Alan Trolove who rode in the inter region cyclocross. In very wet and muddy conditions Alan was the second rider home from the Eastern region finishing 30th out of the 70 starters.
